Sally Due Sperling will be the new hostess at Danhostel Esbjerg on January 1, 2020. She will replace Marianne and Børge Bull who will say goodbye after 23 wonderful years as hosts at Danhostel Esbjerg. Sally is not a stranger to Danhostel as she is the current hostess at Danhostel Kolding and will say goodbye at the end of 2019.

It is hard to believe you are in Denmark when you visit breathtaking Mønsted Limestone Mine. Mønsted Limestone Mine, located close to the town of Viborg, is now an exciting attraction with exciting sounds and lights.
Explore the ancient mines. Follow the marked routes and walk on the illuminated path, or bring a flashlight and proceed deeper into the caves. The paths have maps so you will not get lost. The ceilings are high and well-lit - even if you suffer from claustrophobia. Experience the beautiful underground lakes and dripping sounds.
Rare Threatened Bats
More than 18,000 bats hibernate during winter in Mønsted Limestone Mine. Most are water bats, but there are many types. The bat is an endangered species and there are no special breeding sites in Denmark. Therefore, it is not possible to visit Mønsted Limestone Mine in the evening hours from March 16 to May 10 and from September 1 to October 31.
Multimedia Underground Show
Deep within the mine at the largest lake is an underground cinema which displays multimedia shows which relates the history of mining limestone. The pictures are displayed on the raw limestone walls and are reflected in the large lake.
Find the Cheese
You can also get close to the rooms where the mining cheese is stored. Just go for the smell of broccoli. The humid climate and the constant temperature are perfect for storing cheese.
Handicap Friendly
A section of the path has a wooden pavement which is suitable for wheelchairs, so people who have problems walking can also visit the mines and enjoy the experience.

You can easily spend a full day at Mønsted Limestone Mine exploring the caves and tunnels. Take a trip on the mine train for only 20 DKK per person during high season (operates from May 15 to August 15) or visit the site of the old limestone quarry and learn how they limestone quarrying.
