Travel In and Around Copenhagen

    Joy Smith

It is easy to get around in Copenhagen. There are various means of transport in the city - buses, trains, harbour boats, Metro and bicycles. Find help to purchase tickets and rent bicycles.

Tickets for Public Transport around Copenhagen.

Depending on your travel plans, you have many options where tickets to buses, trains, harbour boats and Metro are concerned.

Buy a City Pass for 24 or 72 hours and get unlimited travel in zones 1-4. These 4 zones are in Copenhagen and the surrounding areas (including Amager).

    A Copenhagen Card is valid for 24, 48, 72 or 120 hours.

A Cash Ticket can be purchased on the bus and is available for travellers who occasionally use public transport. Tickets are valid only in the time allotted for the zones purchased.  A 2 or 3-zone cash ticket is valid for one hour,  tickets for 4, 5 and 6 zones are valid for 90 minutes and tickets for 7-9 zones are valid for 2 hours. Cash tickets cost between 24 and 108 DKK depending on the number of zones required. Zones 1 and 2 cost 24 DKK and cover a large part of the greater Copenhagen area. For travel between Copenhagen Airport and Copenhagen Central Station, a 3-zone ticket is required.  Two children under the age of 12 and accompanied by a paying adult travel free. Two children under 16 years who travel alone can use one adult ticket.

A Flex Card can be purchased a week in advance and is valid from a month to one year. The Flex Card is valid for two children. Keep the ticket until the journey is completed to show the ticket patrol if requested.

A Mobile Voucher with 20 clips is a good value for tourists who want to spend more time in Copenhagen.

A 24-hour Ticket gives adults and children unlimited use in all zones.

Tickets are valid on buses, trains, Metro (including the new City Ring) and harbour buses. Purchase tickets online at DOT's webshop, moviawebshop.dk, Copenhagen Tourist Information, DSB offices, most train stations, and Copenhagen Airport. Travel without a valid ticket, with incorrect zones or longer than the time stated on your ticket will incur a fine of 750 DKK.

    Travel By Bicycle
Copenhagen is known as Bike City, so travel by bicycle is a safe option. Find rental locations all over the city. Biking provides many advantages. Move at your own pace, get off the beaten track and stop whenever you feel the urge to smell the flowers, coffee or bacon.

    Stretch Your Legs
Copenhagen is a small city, so most attractions and activities are within walking or cycling distance. Walking allows you to experience the sights and sounds of Copenhagen and you can meet and greet the locals who can recommend the best spots or secret hang-outs in the city.
