Cisternerne - The Cisterns
The Cisterns – Underground Art Beneath Copenhagen
Hidden beneath Søndermarken Park in Frederiksberg, right across from Copenhagen Zoo, lies one of Denmark’s most extraordinary art spaces — The Cisterns (Cisternerne).
Once a vast underground reservoir that supplied millions of litres of water to the city, The Cisterns have been transformed into a surreal exhibition space where contemporary art meets nature. Inside, water still drips from the ceiling, and eerie light reflects off stalactites and glass installations, creating an atmosphere unlike any other museum in Copenhagen.
Each year, The Cisterns hosts a new exhibition by a different artist, making every visit a unique experience. Dress warmly and give yourself time to wander through this mysterious, meditative world beneath the city.
Location: Søndermarken, Frederiksberg (across from Copenhagen Zoo)
