Spend a Day on Amager

Spend your day exploring Amager, including the area of Christianshavn, but don’t neglect your stomach.

    Breakfast:

Eating breakfast at your Danhostel is always a great idea. You get a budget-friendly, all-you-can-eat breakfast that will keep you full until lunchtime. As an extra bonus, Danhostel's breakfast always includes drinks, so you don't have to pay extra for that all-important morning cup of coffee or tea.

We suggest that you start your day of exploration from Christianshavn SquareThe Square has the Metro stop, Christianshavn, various buses, or you may choose to ride your bike.

If you are looking for a nice cup of coffee or tea to get your day started, check out Sweet Treat. It is a cute little café on St. Annægade, which is a local "darling" in Christianshavn. Expresso House also serves hot drinks.

Christianshavn, the little town within the city, has many picturesque cobblestoned streets and is best experienced on foot. Some of the most beautiful streets are around Skt. Annægade and Christanhavns Kanal.

For a bit of shopping (or window-shopping), head to Munk on Torvegade. Munk is a two-story, award-winning interior design shop, which features their own design and that of other Danish and Scandinavian brands. Another fun shop to visit is Naturpoteket, also on Torvegade. Naturpoteket is a health food store with a large selection of teas, foodstuff, plus natural and organic beauty products.

For a dose of colour, head over to Pang. Located right across from Our Saviour’s Church this shop is perhaps the most colourful shop you will find in all of Copenhagen. The shop has clothing, stationery and lots of other design items, all of which are filled to the brim with colour and humour.

    Lunch:

For lunch, head to Foodie at Amagerbrogade 13 on Amager. The little shop serves sandwiches and stews – both with and without meat. The menu is more or less split 50/50 between meat and vegetarian dishes. Quite a few of the dishes are also vegan and gluten-free. The contents of the sandwiches are often interesting, but delicious. For example, you can get a chicken, peanut butter and honey sandwich or a vegetarian one with feta cheese, dates and salted almonds.

Prices are very reasonable. A vegetarian sandwich is around 45-50 DKK and a sandwich with meat ranges from 55-85 DKK. The small and large stews range in price from 69-86 DKK. All in all, great food at great prices, which will fill you up!

    Afternoon:

After lunch, we suggest that you make your way to the infamous Freetown of Christiania. The Freetown offers many things including green landscape, free concerts, funky-looking hand-made houses, great food and, of course, the infamous Green Light District (formerly Pusher Street).

A few things to note before visiting Christiania:

Remember to bring cash.  The closest ATM is at Christianshavn Square.
Be careful with your camera. Put your camera and phone away when you enter the Green Light District.
Although marijuana is sold openly in Christiania, it is NOT legal.
This shouldn’t keep you from visiting Christiania.  It really is a fascinating place and is so much more than just the Green Light District!

After Christiania you can either take a stroll along Voldene (The Ramparts) or make your way to Siciliansk Is at Christianshavns Kanal 2 for some amazing ice cream.  Why not try both?

    Dinner:

For dinner, you have many choices.  Depending on what you like to eat, we have found a selection of restaurants and cafes which vary in prices.  Here are a few recommendations:

    • Thai Wok Cafeen, Tingvej 12, Copenhagen 2300
    • Sticks ‘n’ Sushi, Amager Strandvej 110, Copenhagen 2300
    • LUNA’s Diner, Sankt Annæ Gade 5, 1416 Copenhagen
