At our Danhostel, you can fish, sail and kayak, or bike and hike on the many trails through the beech forest. Skanderborg town has developed into a trendy area with retail shops, cafes, restaurants and museums. There are also sporting and cultural activities for your enjoyment. Shop on Adelgade (street) or experience Kulturhuset, Skanderborg’s Culture Centre, which overlooks Skanderborg Lake. Visit Ejer Bavnehøj and Himmelbjerget, two of Denmark's highest points. We are close to the motorway so use us as a base to travel to Aarhus and other cities nearby. Our Danhostel is not far from Moesgaard Museum, Givskud Zoo, Aqua in Silkeborg or Randers Tropical Zoo.
A Bit of History on Danhostel Skanderborg
During World War II, the German Air Force had their headquarters in Skanderborg beech forest. They built concrete bunkers and several wooden buildings - some of which housed the head offices of many departments - in Skanderborg Animal Park. The barracks were generally built of wood, but the officers' mess was built of solid wooden beams, which were brought to Denmark presumably from Belgium. The building was completed in the spring of 1944 and was used until May 1945 as the officers' casino and dining room. They spent their free time in the beautiful building which offered a lovely view of the Lake. The soldiers left the location in spring of 1945. The building remains and so does the fantastic view of Skanderborg Lake.
