Meet Hanne Lund - Hostess at Danhostel Sønderborg-Vollerup
In the series of interviews with our hosts, about holidaying in Denmark, we have reached southern Jutland where we will meet Danhostel's oldest host, at our oldest Danhostel.
Name: Hanne Lund
Hostess At: Danhostel Sønderborg-Vollerup in Sønderborg
Number of years at Danhostel: 1 year at Løgumkloster Hostel and 44 years at Danhostel Sønderborg-Vollerup.
Where were you born and raised?
I was born and went to school in Haderslev and lived in Germany and England during the sixties.
Where in Denmark did you spend your last holiday?
The west coast. It is lovely because the countryside is flat, raw and deserted when compared to our east coast which has lush beech forests and hilly terrain.
Where is your favourite place in Denmark to spend your holiday?
It's hard to mention one place. I like the new initiatives in the various museums and the cultural offerings in the cities.
Where in Denmark would you like to visit that you have not been to before?
For me, South Zealand is unknown country, so I would like to visit that area.
What is the best thing about holidaying in Denmark?
The fact that nature and the landscape change, but also the weather. You can have a storm or a gentle breeze, a sunny day or a rainy day. But remember, you only get one rainy day at a time.
What would you like to say to those who do not normally spend their holidays in Denmark?
For tourists from southern Europe and the United States, come and experience the bright summer evenings. To people from Japan, come and see our starry skies. Guests from Chicago, come and experience the rain. To my countrymen, come and experience nature and the history of beautiful South Jutland.
What is the best thing about being hostess at a Danhostel?
I like to meet many amazing happy and curious guests, including Danes who have a great desire to see, hear and experience Denmark. I like to watch the families with children play on our playground or compete at miniature golf. Also experiencing the birth of a guinea pig and watching it run around soon after birth. I also enjoy saying goodnight to the coatis who romp in the trees.
If you could mention ONLY one thing about your Danhostel, what would it be?
That it is Denmark's most fun Danhostel, where nobody ever gets bored.
What other Danhostel would you recommend to our guests?
All are so different and unique as hostels, but also where they are located is interesting.
