A Day in Christianshavn and Amager

A Day in Christianshavn and Amager

Spend your day exploring Christianshavn and Amager, two areas that show Copenhagen’s creative and relaxed side. This is where canals meet open nature, and where local life moves at its own pace.

    Morning
Start your day in Christianshavn, known for its colourful houses and calm canals. Rent a bike or take a walk through the small streets around Sankt Annæ Gade and Christianshavns Kanal. The area is filled with history and local charm. Stop by Our Saviour’s Church and climb the spiral tower for one of the city’s best views.

If you are into architecture, cross the bridge to The Opera House, a striking landmark designed by Henning Larsen. From here, you get a perfect view across the harbour to Amalienborg and the city skyline.

    Midday
Continue toward Refshaleøen, once part of Copenhagen’s shipyard district, now transformed into a cultural hub. Here you can explore art galleries, flea markets, climbing walls and outdoor hangouts. Visit CopenHill, the city’s ski slope and hiking trail built on top of a waste-to-energy plant — a true symbol of Danish sustainability.

If you need a break, relax by the water at Reffen Street Food Market (open in summer) or dip your feet in the harbour at Islands Brygge.

    Afternoon
Head south to Amager Fælled or Kalvebod Fælled, two large green nature parks just minutes from the city. The flat terrain is perfect for walking or cycling, and you might spot deer, birds or wildflowers along the way.

For something completely different, try Copenhagen Cable Park at Refshaleøen, where you can go wakeboarding by cable with the skyline in the background.

    Evening
Before heading back, visit Amager Strandpark, the city’s own beach just 15 minutes from the centre. Locals come here for a swim, a walk, or to watch the sunset over the Øresund Bridge. It’s the perfect way to end a day full of contrasts — from canals and culture to coastline and calm.
