Danhostel Vitskøl Kloster
Stay at Danhostel Vitskøl Kloster, a historic gem located in West Himmerland at the Limfjord.
Spend the night at one of Northern Europe's oldest monasteries, a unique building which provides a cosy setting for tourists and course participants. The facilities consist of a mixture of grandeur, quality and simplicity. We are the perfect location for your overnight stay near the Limfjord in Ranum and offer 19 rooms with private bathrooms. We have a guest kitchen and offer free parking and Wi-Fi.
Our private beach, located on the west coast of the Limfjord, overlooks the island of Livø and is just a 5-minute walk from our hostel door. There are deciduous trees and a beech forest behind the hostel, and close by is Uhrehøj Plantation where you can hike or use mountain bikes on marked routes. West Himmerland and Vilsted Lake, North Jutland’s largest freshwater lake, is within walking distance of our hostel. Walk or cycle on the 20-km trail near the 450 ha. lake and view our sheep and Hereford cattle.
Experience the Middle Ages through taste, smell and sound. We hold a large medieval market every October, with activities such as juggling, conjuring tricks, melodies from the Middle Ages, fighting knights, and medieval food for adults and children.
Stay at Danhostel Vitskøl Kloster during the Christmas season and experience our Christmas market. We will decorate our hostel and sell Christmas decorations, jewellery, paintings, blankets and knitted items, glassware, ceramics, paintings, wine, chocolate, organic fruits and vegetables. The gates to the monastery will be open during the Christmas market so you can see our unique medieval rooms.
Besides being a Danhostel and a tourist destination, Danhostel Vitskøl Kloster is also a modern educational venue managed by TAMU, a nationwide education system for vulnerable young people. When they work at our Danhostel, they gain a foothold in the labour market. Their work is varied and includes administration and maintenance of the monastery, caring for the animals, landscaping and meal preparation. When you stay with us at Danhostel Vitskøl Kloster, you realise that our Danhostel is a piece of Denmark's history, and a trendy retreat.
Stay with us during summer and be inspired by our variety of flowers and herbs. You get free admission to our famous herb garden to see spices and herbs which have been grown on the property for 850 years. The herbs were brought to Vitskøl by Cistercian monks who founded the monastery and the garden in 1158. All our products, including herbs, have been used for cooking and medicine for hundreds of years. Today, the cultivation of herbs is a trademark of Vitskøl, and visitors can experience horticulture in our three greenhouses as well as the unique architecture and botany in our five gardens:
• Sct. Gallenhaven, a replica of an old Swiss monastery garden from 826
• Apothekehaven with medicinal plants arranged in 7 hexagonal gardens
• Herb garden with different herbs and other specialities
• Scented garden with signs for the visually impaired
• Spice garden with more than 60 different herbs, bushes and trees used in various dishes.
